Ireland’s Only Blackcurrant & Horse Breeding Farm Tour & Tasting – Wexford

What You’ll Do

Discover the workings of a blackcurrant farm as Des and his two golden retrievers Molly and Sofie (don’t worry they are very friendly) take you on a tour through the fascinating life cycle of his blackcurrants and learning how these Irish berries became interwoven in Wexford’s cultural history.

You’ll see the hedgehog piles, the bird boxes and wildlife habitats that all contribute to sustainable production as well as the young horses and breeding mares that graze the land. You can even give a carrot to Tom, Sooty and Beauty, the farm’s donkeys.

On returning to the farmyard and home, you will enjoy a delicious blackcurrant cocktail (non-alcoholic)

About Our Member

Since 1955, Des Jeffares’ family have grown blackcurrants on this Blackcurrant and Stud Farm, in the sunny south-east corner of Ireland’s Ancient East. That’s an awful lot of accumulated expertise and perfection in the art of growing blackcurrants, so you can appreciate, he really knows his stuff and Des tells a personal family story that is embedded in the locality, how it has influenced relationships and become part of local culture.

Des has over a hundred acres of blackcurrants and the Ballykelly farm has full Bord Bia Quality Assurance, which means that Jeffares’ farming practices are monitored to the most exacting standards. It takes three years for each plant to produce harvestable fruit. That requires an investment of patience and dedication and hope that the weather will be kind to the crop once it starts to grow.
