OverviewTartare Café + Wine Bar in Galway is run by husband and wife team, JP McMahon and Drigín Gaffey and is the perfect place to visit if you want to enjoy a sampling of great Irish food but don’t have the time to commit to a full sit-down meal. This casual wine bar allows for a quick yet satisfying introduction into Irish food.
Lower Dominick Street in Galway’s Westend is home to Tartare Café + Wine Bar. Opened in September 2017 by husband and wife team, JP McMahon and Drigín Gaffey, Tartare joins their collection of wildly successful eateries which include the Spanish restaurant and tapas bar Cava Bodega along with the Michelin-starred Aniar Restaurant.
Owners JP McMahon and Drigín Gaffey were inspired by places that they had seen on their travels and thus decided to create a casual and relaxed space where people could come and enjoy a variety of Irish foods produced in the signature way of JP and his dedicated team.
The food offering at Tartare varies from daytime to evening. A common theme that runs throughout the three menus at Tartare is JP and Drigin’s love for and dedication to showcasing the dynamic food of the west of Ireland and beyond. Don’t be surprised to find hints of seaweed or some other delightful foraged foods on the menu as they are found in abundance not too far from Galway city itself.
When devising the menus at Tartare, JP was inspired by stints in Copenhagen and the region’s Nordic traditions of cooking. These methods of cooking blend seamlessly with the wealth of Irish produce at hand to create some great tasting pickled and preserved foods.
During the day, diners can enjoy sandwiches of corned beef paired with Irish farmhouse cheese, or smoked chicken and pickled cucumber, both served on freshly cut Irish sourdough and soda bread. For something lighter, the salad offering at Tartare includes a variety of tasty ingredients that effortlessly complement each other. These include a delectable smoked tuna with fennel and sheep’s yoghurt that will leave you well satisfied.
For brunch, you will find many old favourites with a few twists thrown in for good measure. Tartare’s brunch menu wouldn’t be complete without a few tipples to offer diners. Make sure to try the cava mimosa or any of the other beverages produced using spirits from Irish craft distillers.
Things step up a gear in the evening time at Tartare. One of the signature dishes, Tartare, acts as the proud namesake of the restaurant. The popular finely sliced raw dish can be found in numerous forms on Tartare’s menu including beef, tuna, and veal, all seasoned to perfection. The taste experience continues at Tartare with the appearance of one of Galway’s favourite and most famous foods; oysters, of course. Enjoy these seasoned with local ingredients such as sea lettuce, trout roe and dillisk.
Something sweet to finish off the experience comes in the form of light bites like panna cotta.
With an extensive wine list, there is something to nicely compliment each dish at Tartare. Staff will be happy to suggest a great accompaniment to make your dining experience all the better.
Tartare cares about the environment, only working with small ethical producers and using local and organic food produce where possible. Tartare is one of the only wine bars in the country using organic, biodynamic or natural wines on its menu. All of their packaging, coffee cups, and napkins, etc. are compostable.
