Farmgate Cafe is located in the English Market in Cork city. Owner, Kay Harte, has long been committed to local food and she purchases produce from the market below for her daily menus. As a result, her dishes brim with local flavour and reflect the bounty of the famous food market beneath. The cafe enjoys splendid views from its galleried perch, high in the apex of this old and historical building and it is a pleasure to dine on such flavoursome food amongst the vibrant market atmosphere.


At Farmgate Cafe, Irish dishes are executed in simple, traditional style with a modern twist. The menu uses market produce with suppliers named daily on the dining room blackboard. If you want a taste of Cork, this is the place to get it.


Here at Good Food Ireland, we always say that the hardest thing to do is keep it simple in the kitchen – it relies on the freshest of ingredients to start with. But the Farmgate team do this superbly, day in, day out. That is what makes this such an iconic dining destination in Cork city.

The cafe’s suppliers are right underneath as the cafe is located on the gallery overlooking the English Market. With such glorious produce mere metres away, you know you are going to get the freshest of local ingredients and produce.

Expect to see on the menu reared and cured meats like corned beef and corned leg of mutton. These are brought in from market butchers, many of whom rear their own livestock, and are given the Farmgate treatment of long, slow cooking before serving with parsley or caper sauce, floury local spuds with butter and spring cabbage cooked in the meat stock. Real Irish home cooking. Local treasures like tripe and drisheen also feature on the menu as does flappingly fresh fish, which is treated simply to retain the fresh flavour.

The restaurant is on two sides of the balcony. On one side there is table service with the daily menu on the chalkboard. Here is the place to sit a while, where chatter and local news is as much a part of the dining experience as the food. The wine here is also fantastic with a list as conscientiously sourced as the kitchen produce. Farmgate’s head wine waiter sources some delicious bottles and is great at recommendations. A well chosen selection by glass or bottle match the local meats and fish.


On the other side of the balcony, there is a buffet with hot soups, satisfying sandwiches, fresh oysters and other light bites that make for quick dining for customers in a hurry.

If you can though, pull up a chair, linger a while and enjoy the local food, wonderful wine and lively atmosphere.


Farmgate Cafe is commitment to serving fresh, local and seasonal food. Much of the produce they use comes from the famous stalls of the English Market located below them.
