When Eileen Dunne and her husband, Stefano Crescenzi opened their unassuming wine shop on Dublin’s South Frederick Street in 1999, they weren’t to know how quickly it was to become a well-loved institution. It has now grown into a much larger establishment and is joined by a handful of sister restaurants across the city, but Dunne & Crescenzi Italian Restaurant on South Frederick Street remains the flagship site.

The restaurant buzzes with politicians and students, lunching ladies and the literati. There is a great vibe to the place. But mainly people come here for the authentic Italian food and the terrific selection of wines – obviously a huge attraction given the original history of Dunne & Crescenzi, which began as a wine shop.

Beginning life primarily as a wine shop, stocking over 150 wines from every region of Stefano’s native Italy, and serving some cold antipasti and cheeses, Dunne & Crescenzi soon morphed into a popular destination for lunch. Gradually, it became clear that expansion, both in shape and form, was necessary to satisfy demand. Having secured the adjacent premises, a bigger, but still intimate, dining space was created.

Nowadays, simple Italian wooden tables and chairs furnish this light-filled space and the walls are adorned with shelves filled with bottles of wine, oils and vinegars. This is a place to see and be seen, to eat and enjoy authentic Italian food and, more importantly, to appreciate how simple cooking is used to superb effect.

Italian cuisine and the finest Irish ingredients marry here very successfully. Irish meats like Castlemine Farm beef are used to make a truly representative lasagne al forno like you’ve only ever tasted in Italy. Locally-sourced fish and shellfish are turned into Italian-style fish broth. Flavoursome platters of Italian charcuterie enjoyed with a glass of wine make the simplest of meals.

With its authentic food, terrific wines, great vibe and sensational city centre location, it is no wonder that Dunne & Crescenzi is loved by locals and visitors alike.

When it comes to produce and products, Dunne & Crescenzi sources as much as possible from small producers and suppliers in Ireland and in Italy.
