OverviewArd Bia at Nimmos is a casual dining restaurant in the heart of Galway city with an emphasis on and seasonal, local produce. Aoibheann McNamara has created a space that is full of character and atmosphere and food that is bursting with Galway pride. You get a real sense of place on a plate when you eat here and the menu is a showcase of the best suppliers in the region.
Ard Bia at Nimmos is located through the Spanish Arch in a stone building that was originally a boathouse. The building overlooks the Claddagh Basin on the River Corrib in the heart of Galway city. As you dine you can see the river rushing over the stones on one side and on the other you can see the Claddagh.
We love Ard Bia at Nimmos for its casual dining experience and food that truly comes from the heart.
When you arrive at Ard Bia at Nimmos the first thing to catch your eye is an attractive dessert table which hints at the delights yet to come. Everything is homemade, wholesome and hearty. You can smell the sweetness as well as the aroma wafting from the baskets of freshly baked bread.
There are upper and lower level seating areas and both are terrifically cosy and comfortable. Ground level is a nook and cranny space with some private booths to the rear. Higgledy-piggledy shelves around the service counter are laden with bowls of fruit and old wine boxes are filled with service necessities. A chest of drawers in front holds jars of homemade preserves and jams. Upstairs is equally as quirky with pretty as a picture decor and serene views of the water, which also lend to the relaxing vibe.
Settled into your table, it is time to peruse the menus, some of which are clipped to old American bingo cards. Menus are seasonal and there are daily specials too. You’ll want to order everything, so asking the staff what they recommend is always a good idea. They love to chat about the food on offer. Knowledge of local foods at Ard Bia is astounding. You can tell that Ard Bia is run by people who love food, for people who love food.
This is the ideal place to try local produce so do seek out some ingredients you have never tried before. An all day brunch includes the Ard Bia fry and big breakfast sandwiches. At lunch, simple omelettes filled with seasonal ingredients, hunky sandwiches and homemade soup will fill you up and keep you going. You’ll be pleasantly surprised to see very wallet-friendly prices for such a gourmet experience.
In the evenings, style goes up several notches and the busy bustle of the day is replaced by a more intimate atmosphere. Starters, mains and a bit on the side (veggie accompaniments) reflect the time of year but expect to find on the menu fresh fish and shellfish from the Galway coast, local lamb, and game. Scrumptious desserts follow and a terrific all-Irish cheeseboard rounds out this wonderful feast of the island. AS you’ll see, this is a place where food is treated reverently, without pretentiousness.
Wines are as carefully considered as the food and tastings are held regularly to find perfect pairings. There’s also a substantial selection of other beverages including freshly squeezed juices and non-alcoholic health promoting blends, Badger and Dodo coffees and fairtrade hot chocolate, cordials and lemonades.
To try and recreate all of this fabulous food at home, pick up a copy of the Ard Bia cookbook, and some of that bread too, before you leave.
At Ard Bia everything is cooked in house and the team source sustainable produce as locally as possible.
