OverviewMichael O’Neill is the master butcher behind this artisan butchers and is proud to be the third generation working in the family business in Clonakilty in County Cork. His wife Marie works in the traditional wooden cash booth that’s been here as long as the business has. Operations inside have been given a modern-day makeover in terms of equipment, but the principle remains the same; customers select what they want from the counter and go to Marie to pay for it. M J O’Neill is a traditional family butcher’s shop based on longstanding family traditions. That’s very reassuring for the local residents Read More
This artisan family butcher shop in Clonakilty first opened in 1914, and today is run by Mike and Marie O’ Neill, who continue to supply the people of West Cork with local produce. They are proud to be part of such an incredible tradition in its third generation.
MJ O’Neill source the very best of local produce. Its beef comes from the farm of Leslie Beamish, situated on the island of Inchydoney. Its lamb from Colin Bateman’s farm supplemented by Darrara College, while pork and bacon from Caherbeg Pork and Stauntons of Timoleague and poultry from Shannon Vale and Sheehan. Organic eggs are from Devoy’s farm and there’s also spices and seasoning from Spice of Life, Dunmanway.
O’Neill Butchers also has its own range of gourmet sausages (14 different flavours) hand made in-store to complement its traditional black and white pudding, in which they use all-natural ingredients. All the meat you will ever need for breakfast, lunch and dinner.
M J O’Neill is a superb example of a traditional business which has held true to the local food ethos down through the years. It well deserves its Good Food Ireland status for the belief in and support of local farmers.
M J O’Neill’s meat is conscientiously sourced and the shop’s own abattoir just down the road ensures humane processing in very small numbers. It is currently the only abattoir connected to a butcher shop in Clonakilty and one of the very few left in the country.
